An Ode to That First Season of Motherhood

An Ode to That First Season of Motherhood

Gentle care for entering your new season.

As Mother’s Day approaches, we’ve been reflecting on the beginning of the wonderful journey that is motherhood.

Motherhood doesn’t begin with birth. And it doesn’t arrive fully formed, confident, or calm.

It unfolds quietly – through anticipation, change, exhaustion, love, uncertainty, and moments that feel both ordinary and monumental all at once.

So, this is an ode to you, in your first season of motherhood.

Whether you’re carrying new life, or holding it in your arms.

Whether your days feel full, foggy, overwhelming, or deeply tender.

Remember, you matter too.

Becoming, in every sense

This season is overwhelmingly joyful, yes. But it can also be vulnerable, raw, emotional, and deeply physical.

Your body is changing (or recovering). Your hormones are recalibrating. Your sense of self may feel unfamiliar. And the world’s attention has shifted, understandably, to your baby.

But while everyone asks “How’s the baby?” we want to gently ask: How are you?

When the spotlight moves on, don’t forget the Mum

In the early days of motherhood, it’s easy to feel quietly invisible.

So much care goes into preparing for your baby – the clothes, the routines, the essentials. But the mother needs nurturing too.

Not grand gestures, but just little moments of gentleness that say: you are held as well.

A hug from your own Mum.
A hot (yes, still hot!) cup of calming tea.
A relaxing bath.
A clarifying cleanse at the end of a long day.
A familiar scent that brings comfort.
Hydration pressed slowly into tired skin.
Five minutes that are just for you.

These small rituals can become important anchors back to you, especially when everything else still feels so new.

Skin care as care, not correction

In this season, skin often becomes more sensitive. Dryness, redness, breakouts, and pigmentation are all completely normal. But, and it’s important to remember this, they are temporary.

This isn’t a time for “fixing” yourself. It’s a time for supporting, soothing, and listening to your skin and your body.

Gentle routines that nourish the skin barrier, calm inflammation, and restore comfort can help you feel more like yourself again – without asking anything of you in return.

What skin often needs in this season

During pregnancy and early motherhood, skin responds best to:

  • Simple, gentle cleansing

  • Hydration layering to ease tightness and fatigue

  • Barrier-supporting oils for comfort and protection

  • Soft textures and calming scents that slow the nervous system

A note from Saira

“Becoming a mum has been the greatest joy of my life a love so big it has reshaped my body, my hormones, my world. In those early days it’s so easy to disappear into caring for your baby, but my advice to new mums is this: don’t forget yourself. Breathe. Do your skincare. Go for a walk. See a friends.  Nourishing you is part of nourishing your baby. Being a new mum is the most extraordinary experience  embrace it, and embrace yourself too.”

If you’re supporting a new mum or mum-to-be

If you’re reading this for someone you love, know this:

The most meaningful gifts aren’t always practical. They’re the ones that offer rest, reassurance, and permission to slow down.

A quiet ritual.
A moment of calm.
A reminder that she doesn’t have to hold it all together on her own.

That’s care.

To you, in your first season

You don’t need to bounce back.
You don’t need to feel grateful every second.
You don’t need to have answers.

You’re allowed to move slowly.
To feel tender.
To need care.

This season isn’t about perfection – it’s about becoming.

And we see you. We’re holding space for you.

Every step, every stretch, every soft moment in between. 🤍
