Helping Teens with skincare: A Mother's Perspective

Helping Teens with skincare: A Mother's Perspective

Sep 09, 2024Saira Khan

As a mother of teenagers, I've seen firsthand how skincare issues like acne and back acne can affect confidence. Adolescence is a challenging time, and the added pressure of maintaining clear skin can be overwhelming. Over the years, I've found that establishing a consistent skincare routine using natural products can make a significant difference. Here are some common problems my teens face and the solutions we've found together.

Problem: Acne

Teenage acne is a widespread issue that can seriously impact self-esteem. Hormonal changes during puberty often lead to increased oil production, which can clog pores and result in acne. My kids have struggled with breakouts, feeling embarrassed and frustrated.

Solution: Gentle Cleansing and Natural Products

To combat acne, I emphasise the importance of a daily cleansing routine, that doesn’t strip delicate skin but removes impurities effectively.  We use the gentle Balancing Face Wash  that’s free from harsh chemicals and synthetic fragrances. Ingredients like Safflower Oil known for its antioxidant properties, and sesame oil which soothes inflammation, has been particularly effective.

I encourage my teens to cleanse their face twice a day, morning and night, using the oil and cloth method, and to avoid picking at their skin, to prevent scarring and further breakouts.

Problem: Back Acne (Bacne)

Back acne, or "bacne," is another common issue, especially for teens involved in sports. Sweat, combined with the friction from heavy backpacks, can clog pores on the back and lead to acne. My kids have struggled with this, especially after intense activities, feeling uncomfortable and self-conscious.

Solution: Regular Cleansing and Moisturising

Since my teens can't easily reach their own back, I help them with their skincare routine. After sports or any activity that causes sweat, I help them cleansing their backs with the Moisturising Body Oil Wash which is packed with antimicrobial and soothing ingredients.

I massage the oil onto their backs, and then with our damp Organic Cotton Exfoliating Muslin Cloth remove the oil post-cleansing, massaging a little of the non-comedogenic Hydrating Facial Oil into back skin, to keep hydrated without clogging pores. We also make sure clothes are clean, and breathable fabrics to reduce further irritation.

Problem: Personal Grooming and Daily Habit

Developing good personal grooming habits is essential for maintaining healthy skin, but teens often struggle with consistency. My kids sometimes forget to wash their faces or moisturise, leading to dryness or breakouts.

Solution: Establishing Routine and Using Natural Ingredients

To help build consistent habits, we've set up a simple 2 step daily skincare routine. Morning and night, they cleanse faces with Balancing Face Wash and the organic cotton Exfoliating Muslin Cloth, and finish with the Hydrating Facial Oil packed full of antioxidants to keep skin soft and healthy.

I encourage them to drink plenty of water and eat a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables, to support their skin from the inside out.

By focusing on natural skincare products and consistent routines, I've seen a marked improvement in my teens' skin and their confidence. They feel more in control of their appearance, which reduces stress and anxiety.

As a mother, it's rewarding to see them develop healthy habits, that will benefit them long beyond their teenage years.
